One of Mount's paintings contains an easily missed reference to greed. His 1850 “California News” shows a crowd gathered in a room (probably the Stony Brook post office) listening raptly as one man reads from a newspaper about the gold rush. The wall text directs the viewer to a picture of pigs hung above a door, noting that it was “probably Mount's comment on those who rushed to California to make their fortunes.”
